Sunfield Area SPY's Report---4/29/10

Bike-A-Thon This Saturday !

The Sunfield Elementary Parents Group will be holding their annual Bike-A-Thon this Saturday, May 1st. The format for this year's event will be the same as in the past. The riders will ride a 1/3 mile, all pavement, no hills lap on the streets in front of the Sunfield Elementary School. The area will be closed off to vehicular traffic during the running of the Bike-A-Thon. Participants will be seeking pledges for how many miles they can ride in the three hours the event runs.

The Sunfield Area SPY's Bike-A-Thon is open to everyone. Registration will start at 8:30 AM at the Sunfield Elementary School. The event will start at 9 AM and will end at Noon. In case of bad weather the Bike-A-Thon will be held on the following Saturday, May 8th. Rest rooms and refreshments will be provided for the riders. Gift certificates, prizes, and other recognition will be awarded for seven different age groups. There will also be a separate fastest lap competition.

This is the last Hold ‘Em event of the season and we need some help! Care to lend a hand? The work is easy and these events are critical to the many programs we provide. That’s how “Chiclets” gum got started.

Highlights From Our Last Meeting

+ The meeting was brought under control by our Fearless Leader Darin Weller. Regular business reports were given and approved. (8)

+ Correspondence reviewed consisted of a card from the family of Joyce McWhorter.

+ Sam Coan gave a Texas Hold ‘Em report. He has been investigating the Ledge Meadows and Ionia Corners. Our next event is coming up on May 3rd. thru 5th. volunteers are needed.

+ An update was given on the Disney “Give A Day / Get A Day” program.

+ The membership approved the expenditure of $560 to cover the Sunfield area kids involved in the youth wrestling program.

+ A report was given on the “Heart of a Spartan” run that Chris Wegener is participating in.

+ The membership voted to approve a grant of $13,000 to the SPY’s Sunfield Community Foundation scholarship fund.

+ The membership voted to approve a $25 expenditure for the lone Sunfield area youth participating in the Lakewood Middle School tennis program.

+ The membership voted to take no action on a request to provide a “basket” for use at the Sunfield Elementary School’s annual recognition day. Instead the SPY’s will purchase 30 tickets in conjunction the Parents Group upcoming Lansing Lugnuts Baseball excursion. The total cost will be $270. These tickets will be given to students and their parents who are deserving of special recognition, or have a special need.

+ An Adopt-A-Highway report was given.

+ The membership voted to donate $500 to the Farmer’s Picnic Committee for use for this year’s event.

+ Bill Weller gave a Centennial Acres / SPY Shootout golf tournament update. This year’s event will take place on Sunday, June 13th. Detail forthcoming.

+ Discussion took pace on the Parents Group Bike-A-Thon and how we could help. Wendel Peabody volunteered to follow-up on this.

+ Discussion took place concerning a request that came from Ron Wells representing the Farmers Picnic Committee to partner with the SPY’s on a fund-raising event in order to help them out financially.

+ A Scholarship Committee report was given. We have 10 applicants this year, and we have had 8 volunteers step forward to serve on the Scholarship Review Committee. The Committee is in the process of individually going over the applicant packets.

+ The membership voted to approve some needed language adjustments in the Scholarship Award Criteria document.

+ Discussion took place on establishing a points structure for the “Youth Community Service Points Program”. It was decided that 10 points would be awarded for each hours worked.

+ A “Myrtle Report” was given. She has struck again! Stay tuned for the formal announcement.
