Sunfield Area SPY's Report---4/22/10

Thank You---Thank You---Thank You !!!

+ Project chairman Scott McWhorter would like to salute the fantastic crew that showed up last Saturday for our first Adopt-A-Highway trash pick-up of the season. We had 18 terrific people show up to help clean-up our area roadsides. This was an all-time record turnout! With that kind of response, the task was a breeze! We were done in no time. Thanks to Susan Glazier, Buddy Collins, Craig Cappon, Zeke Cappon, David Nash, Brian & LouAnn Harag, Gary & JoAnn Roth, Craig & Jackie Mulholland, Mark & Shari Woodman, Derek Desgranges, Jackson Desgranges, and John & Sandy Fisher. We appreciate your efforts in helping keep the roadways coming into and out of Sunfield spiffed up.

+ A BIG Sunfield Area SPY salute goes out to the fine bunch of helpers that pitched in and did a shift or two at the last Texas Hold ‘Em event at Trippers. Thank you---

+ Thought #1: He who angers you, controls you!

+ Andy Woodman’s Sports Trivia Question-Of-The-Week: Jack Nicklaus has the most Top-10 finishes in Masters history with 22. Who ranks second---Arnold Palmer; Tiger Woods; Jimmy Z; Ben Hogan; or Tom Watson? (Answer later in this column)

+ Why on earth does the Texas Hold ‘Em crew at Tripper’s call Buddy Collins---“Buddy Love”? Do they know something we don’t?

+ Quote-Of-The-Week: (Submitted by Earl “The Pearl” Darby and attributed as being frequently stated by his golfing buddy Tom Schelter) “I go both ways.”

+ The “Sports Trivia Question Just For ‘Smarty-Pants’ Mac Cready Question-Of-The-Week: Who was the first major-league baseball player to hit a home run as the designated hitter---Was it Jimmy Z; Tony Oliva; Ken Griffey, Sr.; Willie Horton; Jim Rice; or Harmon Killebrew? (Answer later in this column)

+ “Understanding New-Age Definitions by Dr. Jill VanAntwerp, (Professor of English at Grand Valley State College). Today’s word is “Burglarize” (bur’-gler-ize). It’s New-Age Definition---What a crook sees with.

+ Cappon Capers---Volume 7: (#1) Did you hear about Craig Cappon planting a personal time capsule? It seems that when our boy was grading his yard at their new place his wallet fell out of his pocket and got buried somewhere. So, a hundred years from now, when it finally festers to the surface, his descendants can see what a fine drivers license picture he had, as well as be able to run up some charges on his credit cards. (#2) And then, he and son Zeke decided to spend the night camping out in the deer blind recently. When they turned in, Craig set his glasses on top of the blind’s furnace. During the night, it got a little too chilly for Craig’s liking, so he fired up the furnace---forgetting where he had left his glasses. Result---major meltdown. To say the least, ole Craig now has a really warped view of things.

+ It was a fine sunny day. Golf fanatic Dave Scoville pulled into the parking lot at Centennial Acres, looking forward to honing his game on a fine Spring day. He parks his car---Puts on his golf shoes---Pushes the button on his automatic key fob gizmo to open his trunk so he can get his clubs out---He hears a click---He tosses his keys under his seat like he always does---He shuts his car door---He moves to the back of the car---The trunk isn’t open like it should be---He heard the click---What happened?---He goes back to the car door to open and retrieve his keys so he can hit the trunk opening button again---Horrors!!!!!---The door is locked!!! It seems that the “click” he heard was when he hit the door lock button instead of the trunk open button. So, there he stands---keys now locked in the car---clubs still held captive in the locked trunk---His golfing partners waiting on the first tee. What’s a fellow to do?

+ Andy Woodman’s Sports Trivia Question-Of-The-Week Answer: Ben Hogan ranks second with 17 Top-10 finishes. He is followed by Gary Player with 15; Sam Snead with 15; Tom Watson also with 15; and Byron Nelson with 14.

+ The “Sports Trivia Question Just For ‘Smarty-Pants’ Mac Cready Question-Of-The-Week Answer: Minnesota’s Tony Oliva, batting in the DH spot, launched a two-run blast off Catfish Hunter of Oakland on April 6, 1973, as the Twins beat the A’s 8 to 3.
