+ Final Thought: The charitable heart of mid-Michigan has seldom been so challenged. As we begin a new year, business and personal resources are still being stretched to their limits. And yet, the need remains vast. In 2005, Michigan ranked 23rd. in the nation for poverty. Now, it stands at 17th. Data indicate that essentially one in seven adults here now live in poverty. For children under the age of 5, some 22% live in poverty. For minority children, the rate nearly doubles. Another perspective---In 2001, the state’s median income was 5.2% higher than the national average. By 2008, it was 6.6% below the national number. It’s not just the amount of poverty, but the speed with which it has overtaken so many. For those of us that helped on the Lakewood Community Council Christmas basket local deliveries, we have seen first hand how many people exist under extreme conditions. We would ask those still able, to please remember some of the local activities with your contributions, like “Sunfield Cares” and “Manna’s Market”, (just to name a couple), that are trying to do what they can to ease the burden of those in need. Thank you.
