Sunfield Area SPY's Report---12/10/09

Community Christmas Basket Distribution Is This Saturday !

The Lakewood Community Council has once again requested our help with the annual Christmas Basket Project for the Lakewood School District. Drivers that are familiar with the Sunfield area are needed this Saturday, December 12th, at 9 AM. It will take just a couple hours of your time, at the most.
The Christmas Basket project helps nearly 200 families in the Lakewood area. We have volunteered to deliver to the designated families in the Sunfield area. Anyone that would like to help out, just show up this Saturday at the Central Methodist Church in downtown Lake Odessa. For further information please contact John Fisher at 566-8278.

Firstbank’s Adopt-A-Family Christmas Tree

Once again, the fantastic folks at the Sunfield branch of Firstbank are sponsoring their “Adopt-A-Family” Christmas Tree. This is a great program that helps make some local kids’ Christmas a whole lot brighter. There are tags on the branches of the “Adopt-A-Family Christmas Tree” located inside the bank. Each tag gives the age and gender of a child, with a hint for a gift on the back. All you have to do to spread some holiday cheer is stop by the bank---take a tag or two off the tree---go buy a gift---and return it to the bank either wrapped or unwrapped by December 15th. That’s all there is to it. Get in the spirit! Stop by the bank today!

Eighth Annual Kid’s Gift Drive Underway

The 8th. Annual Local Kid’s Gift Drive is now underway! Please share the spirit of Christmas with those less fortunate living right here in the Sunfield area. Collection points for any NEW unwrapped toys or gifts for children from infants through 18 years of age have been set-up at the Sunfield IGA or Marko’s Marathon. Please drop your gifts off by Monday, December 22nd. For further information about the program, please call Geniese Davis at 566-8741. Remember, ALL DONATIONS stay right here in the Sunfield area!

+ The “Sports Trivia Just For Ward ‘Smarty-Pants’ Mac Cready Question-Of-The-Week: Once again “Mr. Smarty-Pants” is whining about how easy his questions have been lately. Soooooooooooooooo, I guess I’ll have to start making them a little tougher so that they are worthy of challenging his highly intellectual mind. Here goes---Athletes---mainly football linemen and wrestlers are always trying to follow a high carb / high calorie diet. With that in mind---along with the understanding that McDonalds usually gets the rap for fattening up America---what better place for a pro athlete to bulk up if he / she so desires. That being understood, here is today’s question: On average, how many sesame seeds are there on each McDonald’s Bic Mac bun? Don’t groan. This is an actual quality control monitored item by McDonalds. (Answer later in this column).

+ NOTICE: The SPY’s annual Wild Game Dinner will be coming up on Saturday, February 6, 2010. Tickets will be available soon.

+ The “Sports Trivia Question Just For ‘Smarty-Pants’ Mac Cready Question-Of-The-Week Answer: 178 sesame seeds.

Bill Weller Wins Championship!

The thirtieth annual "Bill 'Moose' Fisher Memorial All World International Poker Championship" is now history. The smoke has cleared and the dust is finally beginning to settle at Fish's Card Room. When it was all said and done, Bill “I Guess Darin Now Knows Who The Poker Player In The Family Is” Weller won this year’s championship.
We had a full field-limit of 30 players. But, this year due to various factors, we had to resort to the waiting list of contestants to fill a couple of last minute cancellations. However, it did not diminish the caliber of the field assembled, as it was a tough one. Over half of this year’s participants have earned the rank of Master or Grand Master in the competition.
Once again it was a great event! Much fun was had by all, and no one got hurt, other than some crushed egos and dashed hopes. Here are the final official standings:
