Sunfield Area SPY's Report---8/13/09

Big Farmer’s Picnic Weekend On Tap

It’s Farmer’s Picnic weekend in Sunfield! Lots of stuff is going on. Many people have put in a considerable amount of work to pull the festivities together. We commend them for their efforts in keeping this great event alive and growing. It’s a time to gather at the park, reminisce with old friends, and meet some new ones. Hope to see you there!

Attention all SPY’s and anyone else willing to lend a hand. Helpers will be needed this week and weekend at the Farmer’s Picnic at a couple of SPY activities---specifically the Dime Pitch Booth and the Barnyard Classic 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament. Set-up help for the Dime Pitch will be needed Thursday night. Set-up help for the basketball tournament will be needed starting at 7 AM on Saturday morning.

In addition to the set-up help, we will need booth helpers and court watchers. If you can lend a hand on either or both events for any amount of time, please give a call to James “Captain Coin Toss” Peabody (Dime Pitch) at 566-8399, or Darin “King Of The Dribblers” Weller (Basketball) at 517-819-4657. Thanks! We need all the help we can get!

+ The Sunfield Area Sponsors of Programs for Youth wish to once-again send out our sincere thanks to everyone who made our fifth annual “Summer Celebration” combination car show; barbeque cook-off; and 5 K run / walk a success. Please see our “Thank You” ad elsewhere in this paper for the names of all the great people who make this event so special.

* I’ll bet you didn’t know that the always fashionable Ivan “Ya Gotta Keep Up With The Current Trends” Suntken has a pair of Ralph Loren custom monogrammed designer work boots! Stop in and take a look at the latest in hotsey-totsey footwear.

* Attention All SPY Members---We are seeking someone to take over heading up our Texas Hold ‘Em event chairmanship. This is primarily a scheduling and paperwork filing activity work-wise, but it is for the #1 income-generating program that we do! This is important to our organization and community. Much support will come with taking on this leadership position. If you are interested, or would like to get more information, please contact either Darin Weller (517-819-4657) or John Fisher (566-8278).

* Have you noticed that Jeff “Hammerhead” Smith is about two inches taller these days. I wonder if this growth spurt has anything to do with his recent self-inflicted altercation he had with a post driver and the resultant knot on his head. See the “Do You Hear The Bells” Boy for details.

* Andy Woodman’s Sports Trivia Question-Of-The-Week: Since we have been celebrating the 40 anniversary of man’s landing on the moon, I have a couple of questions for you about that. What golf club was used by Alan Shepard to hit a golf ball on the moon and how many golf balls did he hit? (Answer later in this column)

* Congratulations and a wish for much success goes out to Chris “The Homesteader’s Friend” Wegener on his latest business venture---The Sunfield KOA Camp. Even though he got off to a late start for this year’s camping season, he’s bound to have great success with his location.

* While we’re on the topic of camping, the next time you run into Larry or Katie Terpstra, be sure to ask them about the recent camping trip out west. Be sure to inquire as to who was responsible for their new fifth-wheel getting hung up on the rocks resulting in a blown tire. Let me tell you, you’ll get an earful---especially from Katie. “Larry never listens to me!”

* “Honest Roy’s” Quote-Of-The-Week: “Now-a-days when I go to the store I like to have a little fun. When they ask me, "Paper or Plastic?" I just say, "Doesn't matter to me. I am
bi-sacksual." Most of them just stare at me with a blank look.”

* A Sign Of The Times-----Across the state road commissions have found that maintaining paved roads have become quite burdensome because of declining revenues. So, they’ve started busting up less traveled roads and putting them back to gravel. Recently State Transportation Director Kirk Studle told a legislative committee that 26 road commissions have now busted up at least some of their local roadway. It’s cheaper to maintain, as they just send a grader down the road every now and then, and can stop worrying about filling potholes. Makes you wonder what the next few years around here will bring.

* The “Sports Trivia Just For Ward ‘Smarty-Pants’ Mac Cready Question-Of-TheWeek: Here’s a two parter for you---Is an arrow that bounces off the target awarded points in tournament archery? And, what color is the bulls-eye on an official archery target? (Answer later in this column).

* Louie “Trouble-Shooter” Trowbridge’s Solution-Of-The-Week: Here’s a note concerning something that has been in the media quite a lot lately and bears repeating. It gives us something to think about with all our new electronic technology---especially vehicle GPS systems. A couple of weeks ago a friend told me that someone she knew had their car broken into while they were at a softball game. Things stolen from the car included a garage door remote control, some money and a GPS, which had been prominently mounted on the dashboard. When my friends got home, they found that their house had been ransacked and just about everything worth anything had been stolen.

As it turns out, the thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house. They then used the garage remote control to open the garage door and gain entry to the house. The thieves knew the owners were at the softball game---they knew what time the game was scheduled to finish---so they knew how much time they had to clean out the house.

Something to consider if you have a GPS---don't put your home address in it. Put a nearby address (like a store or gas station) so you can still find your way home if you need to, but no one else would know where you live if your GPS were stolen.

* Andy Woodman’s Sports Trivia Question-Of-The-Week Answer: He used a 6-iron to hit three golf balls.

* The “Sports Trivia Question Just For ‘Smarty-Pants’ Mac Cready Question-Of-The-Week Answers: Yes---Yellow
