* Honest Roy’s Quote-Of-The-Week: “Practice safe eating - always use condiments.”
* Andy Woodman’s Sports Trivia Question-Of-The Week: Who was the first relief pitcher to win the Cy Young Award? Was it Sparky Lyle---Rollie Fingers---Jimmy Z---Mike Marshall---John Hiller---or Vida Blue? (Answer later in this column)
* FACTOID #1: There are more Irish in New York City than in Dublin, Ireland; more Italians in New York City than in Rome, Italy; and more Jews in New York City than in Tel Aviv, Israel.
* Hey SPY’s---2009 dues are due!!! See our Treasurer Bill “I Will Track You Down Like A Dog” Weller and get caught up. Note---If you stopped receiving your paper that a pretty good sign your dues are due.
* The “Sports Trivia Question Just For ‘Smarty-Pants’ Mac Cready Question-Of-The-Week: In 1966 Texas-El Paso beat Kentucky to become the NCAA Division I Basketball Champions. Who won the Tournament's Most Valuable Player Award even though his team WAS NOT in the Championship Game? (Answer later in this column)
* FACTOID #2: Did you know that SPAIN literally means “the land of rabbits”?
* “Understanding Red-Neck Verbiage” by Dr. Jill VanAntwerp, (Professor of English at
Grand Valley State College). Today’s word is “Varicose”. It means---Near or close by.
* Swede’s Groaner Corner: Did you know that when a clock is hungry, it goes back four seconds.
* Thought #2: Opportunity may knock once, but temptation bangs on the front door forever.
* Louie “Trouble-Shooter” Trowbridge’s Solution-Of-The-Week: You know when you try to pull some foil out and the roll comes out of the box -- Then you have to put the roll back in the box and start over. The darn roll always comes out at the wrong time. Well, I would like to share this with you. Yesterday I went to throw out an empty Reynolds foil box and for some reason I turned it, and looked at the end of the box. And written on the end it said, Press here to lock end. Right there on the end of the box is a tab to lock the roll in place. How long has this little locking tab been there? I then looked at a generic brand of aluminum foil and it had one too. I then looked at a box of Saran wrap and it had one too! I can't count the number of times the Saran wrap roll has jumped out when I was trying to cover up something. Whoever looks at the end of your aluminum foil box?
* FACTOID #3: Did you know that the combined weight of all the worlds ants, is equal to that of all the
humans in the world? That should give one pause to think of how many of those little buggers there are
around!
* Luanne---“Denny, your boss called. He said if you don’t show up tomorrow, don’t bother showing up on
Monday. Denny: “Woo-hoo! Four-day weekend!”
* Another Historical Tid-Bit From The Vast Archives Of Wendel “Thong” Peabody: Ruth Cleveland was the daughter of Grover Cleveland, the first child to be born in the White House. In the 1920s, a marginally successful confection called Kandy Kake changed its name to Baby Ruth, in honor of the White House kid. It soon became the best-selling candy in America. Many people erroneously believe that the candy bar was named for baseball great Babe Ruth. It was not. In fact, Ruth once tried to market his own brand of candy, and the Curtiss Candy Company took him to court. Babe Ruth was forbidden to use his own name on his candy to avoid confusion with a Baby Ruth.
* The Dottie League Duffers Quote-Of-The-Week: (This week’s entry comes from Dave “DohDoh” Scoville) “My favorite shots in golf are the practice swing and the conceded putt. The rest can never be mastered.”
* Andy Woodman’s Sports Trivia Question-Of-The-Week Answer: Mike Marshall
* The “Sports Trivia Question Just For ‘Smarty-Pants’ Mac Cready Question-Of-The-Week Answer: Jerry Chambers attended the University of Utah during the mid-1960s, winning the NCAA Basketball Tournament Most Outstanding Player award in 1966 after his team reached the Final Four. He played four professional seasons in the National Basketball Association as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, Phoenix Suns, Atlanta Hawks, and Buffalo Braves. In 1968, he was involved in one of the most significant transactions in NBA history when the Lakers traded him, Archie Clark and Darrall Imhoff to the Philadelphia 76ers for Hall-of-Famer Wilt Chamberlain. Chambers never played for the 76ers, who traded him to Phoenix in 1969.
